– Rev. Vickie Woolard, Pastor at Plymouth UMC
I’ve had a phrase stuck in my head now, for days – simple things are best.
I’ve googled it, trying to find the source of it.
Maybe it’s a quote from a story I read?
A song I used to sing?
A poem I memorized?
It’s frustrating not to be able to remember where it comes from, or in what context it was used.
But this – thinking of it has focused my mind on the joy of simple things.
This week, I’ve appreciated the sweetness of the breeze while I mowed at the farm.
I’ve reveled in sunshine, warm on my shoulders, while I read on my deck.
I’ve listened to laughter, I’ve lost myself in laughter, and been struck by what a gift it is to giggle with someone else.
I’ve spent time by myself.
I’ve spent time with friends, best friends, and I’ve felt peace both in the solitude, and, in good company.
And I think, yes, simple things are best.
My prayer for you, this day, is that you find joy in these simple things.
Wear a soft T-shirt that fits just right.
Eat an ice cream cone in the shade of an old tree.
Walk down to the river and watch silver minnows dart and flash in dark water.
Pat a good old dog.
And rest.
Remember Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11.28-30.
Blessings,
Vickie
