In music, grace notes are special ornamental notes that are generally played lightly and quickly.
They don’t carry the melody; they aren’t necessary for the music.
They just add airiness, light, flourish, and joy to the music.
Today was a long day, as some days are, and there was much that was serious.
Truth, there is much in this world that is serious.
Some people hurt.
Some people are sick, and the truth is that some of them will never get well.
There is hunger, fear, anger.
But there are always grace notes that remind us of joy.
For a time, he let me carry him today, the little boy. He sat in my arms, alert, watching this world he has been part of for only a few months. He was solid, sweet, full of smile and promise and so very much hope.
Today, driving from one kind of work to another, I looked up in the sky. There, high above me, was a white egret. His wings were outstretched, and he soared on air currents that held him safe, suspended between heaven and this earth. Sunlight flashed on his feathers, and for a moment, beauty made me breathless.
This evening I worked, oblivious to the small ladybug who traveled with me, on my shoulder. She was tiny, delicate, intricately wrought by the same Creator who made me. We walked together for a time on this good earth, she and I, until it was time for her to go one way and for me to go another.
Grace notes all.
I didn’t need to carry the little one, and yet, he gifted me with his innocence for a while.
I didn’t need to see the egret fly so high above the bonds of gravity, and yet, there he was.
I didn’t need the elegant little ladybug, and yet, for a moment, we walked together.
Grace notes all.
May we be grace notes in someone else’s life.
May we add sunshine and laughter.
May we share our time, our attention, and our peace with others.
May we share our joy.
May we always love.
Blessings,
Vickie
